When you click a Web link in a message in Outlook Express, you may experience slow response. Also, opening a message may take an unusually long time.

This behavior can occur if you have turned on background compaction of stored newsgroup messages in Outlook Express.

To resolve this behavior, turn off background compaction:
  1. In Outlook Express, on the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the Maintenance tab, click to clear the Compact messages in the background check box, and then click OK.
  3. Quit and then restart Outlook Express.
