When you pause or stop video playback in Microsoft Windows Media Player, the time code that is displayed by the player may differ from the time code that is displayed in the video. The time code may be different by one or two frames. This problem occurs when Windows Media Player plays back content that has a time code embedded in Windows Media Format and a time code imprinted on the video.

If you manually skip forward one frame, or if you manually skip backward one frame, the time code in the player synchronizes to match the time code in the video.

This problem occurs because of a rendering problem when you pause or stop video playback. Specifically, the time code is updating at the frame rate of the content. The user interface of the player samples the current time code on a timer. When the content is paused, this timer stops updating. Depending on the moment when you click the Pause button or the Stop button, one or two extra frames may be rendered. This behavior causes the two time code values to be different.

A tool can be created on top of Microsoft Windows Media Format SDK 9 Series. This tool can help you verify that the time code that is imprinted in the video frame matches the time code in the video. This can help narrow down the cause of the problem.
