Symptoms

After you restart a Microsoft Windows XP-based or a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, the computer may stop responding (hang), or the display may be corrupted.

This problem may occur on Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI)-compliant computers that use Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controllers (APICs) if the computers use the ACPI RESET_REG method instead of using the keyboard controller to restart. This configuration typically occurs with legacy-free computers (that have no legacy keyboard controller) that use Hyper-Threading processors with APICs.

Service pack information

Hotfix information

To enable this hotfix, you must add the /forceresetreg flag to the Boot.ini file. For example, modify the Boot.ini file to resemble the following:

Workaround

To work around this problem, disable APIC and then enable PIC in the BIOS if the BIOS supports changing the Interrupt Controller mode.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
