This article describes the 2007 Microsoft Office system issues that are fixed in the hotfix package that is dated October 28, 2008.

This hotfix package fixes the following issues that are not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
  • After you install 2007 Microsoft Office suites Service Pack 1 on a computer that has Windows Installer 4.x installed, Office Customization Tool (OCT) updates are sequenced incorrectly, and the OCT updates are not applied.

  • If a 2007 Microsoft Office system product is installed on a Windows Vista-based computer, any successive installations cause a crash of the Msiexec.exe process. This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
    • The successive installation uses the system account.
    • The successive installation uses a customization file that was created by using the OCT.


Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problems that are described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problems described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

How to apply this hotfix

  1. Download the hotfix package.
  2. Extract the following file from the hotfix package:
  3. Double-click the file that you extracted in step 2 to add or replace the following files in the root of the Office installation source:
    • .\Admin\Oct.dll
    • .\Admin\Patchca.dll
    • .\Admin\fr-fr\Octres.dll
  4. Use these new files to save the Office Customization Tool updates.


There are no prerequisites for installing this hotfix.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace a previously released hotfix.

Registry information

To use one of the hotfixes in this package, you do not have to make any changes to the registry.
