Problem description

On a computer that has Windows Internet Explorer installed, you run the Internet Explorer Customization Wizard. You use this wizard to create an Internet Explorer customized package. In the wizard, you remove the default elements of the following features:
  • Favorites
  • Feeds
  • Links

Note The Internet Explorer Customization Wizard is a component of the Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK).
You build the customized package, and you install the package on a destination computer. However, the default elements of the features that you removed still exist.

To have us fix this problem for you, go to the “Fix it for me” section. If you’d rather fix this problem yourself, go to the “Let me fix it myself” section.

Fix it for me

To fix this problem automatically, click the Fix this problem link. Then click Run in the File Download dialog box, and follow the steps in this wizard.

Note This wizard is temporarily in English only. However, the automatic fix also works for other language versions of Windows.

Note If you are not on the computer that has the problem, you can save the automatic fix to a flash drive or to a CD so that you can run it on the computer that has the problem.

Now go to the "Did this fix the problem?" section.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Windows Vista Service Pack 1.

More information

This hotfix does not completely resolve the issue. The default elements of the feeds, favorites, and links features are created even after you remove them when the IEAK package is created. This hotfix only keeps the default elements from being re-created through auto-configuration or through branding.

You have to manually remove the default elements that are created during the installation of the IEAK package on a per-user basis. Or, you can remove them by using a script. After the default elements are removed, the hotfix and the corresponding registry keys keep them from being re-created.

This fix is included in the Internet Explorer Administration Kit 8. To enable the fix for IEAK8 packages, follow the steps outlined in the Registry Information under the RESOLUTION section for the intended operating system.
