Step 2: Determine whether you  are logged on to Windows with an administrator account

To make the changes that this task requires, you must be logged on with an administrator account.

If this is your personal computer, you are likely already logged on with an administrator account. If this is a computer that is part of a network at work, you might have to ask the system administrator for help.

To determine whether you are logged on with an administrator account, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Date and Time dialog box. Here are the steps if you need them:
    1. Click Start, and then click Start Search.
    2. Type the following command (or copy it and paste it) in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER:

      timedate.cpl

The Date and Time dialog box opens.

  2. Click Change date and time in the Date and Time dialog box. When the User Account Control dialog box opens, click Continue.
  3. Now, do one of the following, depending on what happens when you click Continue:
  • If your computer does not prompt you for a password

You are already logged on with an administrator account. Click Cancel two times to close the Date and Time dialog box, and then you are ready to continue with this task.

  • If your computer prompts you for a password

You are not logged on with an administrator account.

Therefore, to continue with this task, you must first log off, and then log back on to Windows by using an administrator account. If you do not know how to log back on to Windows by using an administrator account, you will have to ask someone for help. If this computer is part of a network at work, you can ask the system administrator for help. But if  this is a personal computer that is not part of a network, you must know the password for an administrator account on your computer. Otherwise, this content cannot help you any further.
