You cannot extract the files in the SQL Server 2000 Evaluation version that you download from the Web site if the free disk space on your hard drive is less than 500 MB above a multiple of 4 GB.

For example, if the free space on your hard drive is between 4 GB and 4.5 GB, or 8 GB and 8.5 GB, or 12 GB and 12.5GB, and so on, the following error message occurs after you run Sqleval.exe:
There is not enough space on drive C:\ to extract this package. Please free up 515.82MB and click Retry.

To work around this behavior you can either:
  • Create a file that is large enough to decrease the amount of free disk space on the hard drive so that it is not in one of the ranges specified in the "Symptoms" section of this article. For example, if you have 8.3 GB free on your hard disk and you create a 400 MB file, the space the file takes reduces the free space to 7.9 GB. You are then able to extract the files for the Evaluation Edition if you execute the Sqleval.exe self-extracting archive and you can delete the empty 400 MB file you created.

  • Copy the contents of any CD to a folder on your hard disk, and then delete the folder after you extract the Evaluation Edition files.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in SQL Server 2000.
