When you try to use the "Physical to Virtual" (P2V) wizard in Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007, you receive an error message that resembles the following error message:
This problem occurs only if the Active Directory computer object of the source computer is in one of the built-in organizational units. For example, this problem occurs if the Active Directory computer object of the source computer is in Active Directory Users and Computers.
SCVMM is unable to locate the source computer server1.computers.contoso.com in Active Directory Domain Services.
Verify that the server name and the domain name are correct, and then try the operation again.
This problem occurs because the program looks up the name of the source computer. The resulting fully qualified domain name (FQDN) includes an organizational unit component that is not a valid component for a Domain Name System (DNS) FQDN. In the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section, the organizational unit is the Computers organizational unit.
To resolve this problem, edit the FQDN of the computer in the "Select source" step of the P2V wizard. Edit the name so that the organizational unit component is not part of the name. In the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section, the name would be changed to the following name:
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
