Symptoms

If you start System Monitor (Perfmon.exe) using the /wmi command-line option, data is logged only for the first instance of the process. When you try to collect data from a process that has multiple instances, every instance is identified as the first instance, and the same data is logged for every instance.

Resolution

Service pack information

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Prerequisites

To install this hotfix for Windows 2000, you must first have installed Windows 2000 Service Pack 2, Service Pack 3 or Service Pack 4.

To install this hotfix for Windows XP, you must first have installed Windows XP Service Pack 1.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart your computer after you apply this hotfix. However, you must stop Performance Monitor before you apply this hotfix.

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

Workaround

To work around this issue, start System Monitor without the /wmi command-line option.

Note If you use this workaround, you cannot use a Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) interface.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.

More information

If you start System Monitor using the /wmi command-line option, System Monitor obtains performance data using WMI instead of the registry.
