Symptoms

After you apply one or more of the following security updates to the corresponding version of Internet Explorer, third-party programs and the Service Advertising Protocol may not work as you expect.

After you apply the following security update, the Service Advertising Protocol may not work as you expect:
828750 MS03-040: October 2003 cumulative patch for Internet Explorer

Cause

This problem occurs because the version of the Shlwapi.dll file that these security updates install uses a base memory address that is below the 0x7000000 memory address location. Some programs require a non-fragmented memory address space below the 0x7000000 memory address location.

Resolution

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1

To resolve this problem in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1, install security update MS03-048 or a later security update.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 3 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 4

To resolve this problem in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 3 and in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 4, install the following hotfix.

Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next update to Internet Explorer 6 that contains this hotfix.
