SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • On a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, you create an ActiveX control by using Visual Basic 6.0.
  • You add a Frame control to the ActiveX control. Additionally, you set the BorderStyle to 0 for the frame control.
  • You host the ActiveX control in an HTML webpage and then open the webpage in Internet Explorer 9.
  • You click applications other than Internet Explorer 9 to deactivate Internet Explorer 9.
In this scenario, the Frame control caption is shown unexpectedly.

CAUSE

The issue occurs because Internet Explorer 9 sends the WM_CHANGEUISTATE message to the ActiveX control. The message indicates that the UI state should be changed. Visual Basic 6.0 does not handle the WM_CHANGEUISTATE message. Therefore, Visual Basic 6.0 passes the message to the default window procedure. This causes the caption to be displayed.
