Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a print server that is running Windows Server 2008.
  • The print server has many print queues and print ports.
In this scenario, the CPU usage of the print spooler service (Spoolsv.exe) occasionally spikes for a while. Additionally, one of the following issues may occur:
  • Some print jobs are missing on the print server.
  • The print spooler service stops responding when you try to restart it.
Note To recover from this issue, you have to restart the server.

Cause

This issue occurs because the TCP/IP port monitor module (Tcpmon.dll) handles queries for bidirectional printer communication inefficiently.

Resolution

After you apply this hotfix, the TCP/IP port monitor module (Tcpmon.dll) is updated to improve performance.

Windows Server 2008 file information notes
Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows Vista" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
