Symptoms

A 64-bit version of Windows Server 2003 is running on a computer that has more than 32 processors. When you install a network adapter driver on the computer, Windows Server 2003 may restart unexpectedly after you receive the following Stop error message:
Stop 0x000000D1 (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4)
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Notes
  • The four parameters in this error message vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.
  • Not all "0x000000D1" Stop errors are caused by this problem.

Cause

A network adapter driver must call the NdisMRegisterInterrupt function from the MiniportInitialize function if the network adapter generates interrupts. The NdisMRegisterInterrupt function must run through a loop to initialize the DPC object for each processor.

However, the Network Device Interface Specification (NDIS) miniport interrupt structure limits the number of processors to 32. Therefore, the system generates a Stop error message when the NDIS driver tries to initialize the DPC object for the thirty-third processor.

Resolution

After you apply this hotfix, the NDIS driver supports up to 64 processors.

Driver developers may have to rebuild their NDIS miniport drivers
  • If your NDIS miniport driver is not created by using the NDIS 5.2 Driver Kit, you use the latest version of the Windows Driver Kit (WDK) to rebuild your NDIS miniport driver.
  • If your NDIS miniport driver is created by using the NDIS 5.2 Driver Kit, you have to use NDIS 5.2 Driver Kit to rebuild the driver. However, you must update the ndis.h file in the NDIS 5.2 Driver Kit before you rebuild the driver.

    Note It is by design that NDIS 5.2 Driver Kit is not supported in the latest version of the WDK.

    To update the ndis.h file, follow these steps:
    1. Open the ndis.h file in your favorite editor.
    2. Locate the following line of code:
      #define NDIS_MAX_PROCESSOR_COUNT 32

    3. Replace this line of code with the following code:
      #ifdef _WIN64
      #define NDIS_MAX_PROCESSOR_COUNT   64
      #else
      #define NDIS_MAX_PROCESSOR_COUNT   32
      #endif
      4. Save the changes to the ndis.h file.
    The updated ndis.h file can correctly work with the NDIS wrapper (ndis.sys) to support more than 32 processors.
