Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, you add a mirror to the boot disk. Then, in the Computer Management dialog box, you remove the mirror from the boot disk. Finally, you physically switch the boot disk and the mirror disk. In this scenario, Windows Server 2003 no longer starts on the computer.

Cause

This problem occurs because, when you remove the mirror from the boot disk, the boot disk information is removed from the Boot.ini file on both the boot disk and the mirror disk.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, make sure that you successfully switch the boot disk and the mirror disk. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Disconnect the mirror disk from the computer.
  2. In the Computer Management dialog box, remove the mirror from the boot disk.
  3. Physically switch the boot disk and the mirror disk. When you do this, the mirror disk becomes the new boot disk.
  4. Start Windows Server 2003, and then add a mirror to the new boot disk.
