After you upgrade to Outlook Express and then uninstall Outlook Express to revert to your previous version of Outlook Express, the Outlook Express 5 icons remain on the desktop.
To resolve this problem, obtain Outlook Express 5.5. For additional information about Outlook Express 5.5 and how to download it, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

To restore the appropriate Outlook Express icon:
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
This problem was corrected in Microsoft Outlook Express 5.5.
If the previous version of Outlook Express was functioning properly, it should function properly after uninstalling Outlook Express 5. Double-clicking the Outlook Express 5 icon starts the previous version of Outlook Express.
Deleting the Shelliconcache file in the Windows folder and restarting the computer does not restore the original Outlook Express icon.
