SYMPTOMS

Considering the following scenario:
  • You install Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) 4.5 on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) or that is running a 64-bit version of Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (SP2).
  • You install multiple applications by using MSI together with the Per-User option. For example, you run the following command to install a MSI package named application.msi:
    MSIexec.exe /i application.msi ALLUSERS=""
In this scenario, when you run a Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) query against the Win32_Product class to obtain a list of installed applications, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
Error
Number: 0x80041001
Facility: WMI
Description: Generic failure
After you dismiss the error, the list of installed applications is not obtained.

Note This problem does not occur in Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1.
